This app was originally developed to be the centerpiece of an interactive digital compass exhibit teaching people about why Richmond was an important place in 1865 as part of the sesquicentennial of the American Civil War and Emancipation. However, we plan to modify this to other locations and types of content.

Visitors stand on a floor graphic of a compass rose, oriented in the correct direction on the grounds. Holding a tablet, as the visitor rotates, a video slideshow for one of 7 different historic resources around the city. When the video is finished, the compass displays again, allowing the user to rotate and select another site.

This app was built using MIT App Inventor 2 specifically for use on a single exhibit tablet. The videos are stored locally on the device and are not provided at this time. In this case, we produced simple videos by creating PowerPoint slideshows with appropriate timing and fade-out transitions, and then converting them to video. In order to make this application work, you will need to create a folder on your device to store videos and make sure the links in your App Inventor code blocks are updated to the correct path:

It is possible to bundle video files directly into the app, however, large file sizes seem to cause problems and local storage is the best option to preserve quality.

Once locations were selected, compass bearings were calculated for each along with appropriate ranges of coordinates (in order to fill up all 360° of the circle). Large gaps are split, displaying a "keep moving" message.

The file is available here. To use this file, go to App Inventor 2 and import project using this data.

Graphic design improvements beyond stock AI2 buttons, etc. are on the horizon. If you make any big improvements, please submit a pull request!

Known issues: There is a bug in AI2 that impacts auto play of videos. A workaround uses a timer as the trigger. Additionally, the first time a video is launched, the controls bar remains visible. To solve this problem, just open up one video and then back out of the compass again. The bar should disappear after a couple of seconds when subsequent videos are opened.
